Arm Care and Post Donation FAQs

Most donors feel fine after giving blood, but mild side effects can happen. Here is what to expect and what to do if you are not feeling well after your donation.

After my donation, I feel pain or swelling in my arm

Some puffiness, swelling, or bruising at the donation site can happen and is usually not a cause for concern.

What you can do

  • Apply a cold compress on and off for the first 24 hours.
  • After 24 hours, switch to warm compresses several times a day.

Bruising happens when a small amount of blood leaks from the vein and collects under the skin. Sometimes bruising may appear below the donation site, including under the arm or near the elbow. This blood is slowly reabsorbed by the body, and the bruising typically fades within two to four weeks.

As the bruise heals, the area may change color, often moving from purple-black or reddish-blue to yellowish-green. Not glamorous, but normal.

When to seek medical care

Contact your health care provider if you have:

  • severe pain
  • red streaks around the donation site
  • pus
  • warmth around the area

*If you receive medical treatment, please notify Risk Management at Gulf Coast Blood at (713) 791-6345. Leave a voicemail, and a Risk Management representative will contact you.

Post Donation FAQs

Your body may not tolerate the donation process. If you have adequately prepared for your donation by drinking plenty of fluids and eating a good meal and still become lightheaded or faint, you should not donate again until discussing it with your health care provider.

Small amounts of scar tissue can develop around the site repeatedly used for blood donations and may make the donation process more difficult in the future. The degree of scarring varies by individual. Allowing the phlebotomist to use a different vein or different areas of the vein may reduce scarring.

Apply pressure to the site until bleeding stops. Then apply a bandage. If swelling occurs, apply ice. Be sure to avoid lifting with this arm.

Because of scheduling difficulties, it is preferable that you seek medical treatment from another health care provider.

Please contact Risk Management at (713) 791-6345 and one of our representatives will assist you with securing a medical evaluation.
