Could You Be Prediabetic and Not Know It?
Did you know that 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. has prediabetes, and most aren’t even aware of it? This silent condition can lead to diabetes, which can cause devastating health complications if left unmanaged. Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is stepping in to tackle this health crisis by offering complimentary A1c tests to all blood donors from December 1, 2024, through February 28, 2025.
Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how the body processes sugar, leading to elevated blood sugar levels that can cause serious health issues over time. The A1c test is a simple yet powerful tool that measures average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. Many individuals are unaware of their blood sugar levels, and regular monitoring can be key in diagnosing diabetes early or managing existing conditions.
Here’s what your A1c levels reveal:
· Below 5.7%: Normal
· 5.7% to 6.4%: Prediabetes
· 6.5% or Higher: Diabetes
Left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to serious complications, including heart disease, kidney failure, vision loss, nerve damage, and increased stroke risk.
From December 1, 2024, through February 28, 2025, all blood donors who successfully donate will automatically receive a complimentary A1c test. The results will be accessible through the donor’s digital account within two weeks of their donation. This unique opportunity offers donors a convenient, cost-free way to take charge of their health while making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
“Promoting overall wellness helps foster a healthier community, where individuals are helping others through blood donations and receiving valuable health information,” said Dr. Beth Hartwell, Chief Medical Officer at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. “Providing an A1c screening while donating is a convenient way to get the screening done, encourages early intervention, and promotes a culture of health and wellness within our community. We save patient lives together through blood donations; this screening could potentially save a donor’s life.”
Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is dedicated to providing lifesaving blood products to patients in need, advancing medical research, and contributing to the development of treatments and potential cures for diseases like diabetes. We care about the well-being of our donors and the community, ensuring that every donation not only saves lives but also offers individuals valuable health insights through complimentary A1c testing.
