As a Commit for Life volunteer, you will most often have the opportunity to help out at blood drives and community events during the week. We occasionally have opportunities for public speaking and light office work as well. Open volunteer assignments are communicated through our Volunteer Newsletter after you have attended orientation.

How You Can Help as a Volunteer
Volunteers are vital to our mission at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. Find out how you can help!
Work with our donor collections staff to ensure donors have a WOW experience.
Specific duties may include:
- Setting out blood drive signage
- Setting up welcome table
- Escorting donors from the welcome table to the donor coach or screening area (distance will vary based on blood drive location)
- Answering basic questions about the donation process
- Passing out refreshments to donors
- Observing donors for post-donation reactions
- Encouraging donors to Commit for Life
- Thanking donors for their life-saving donations.
Educate the community about the need for blood donations and the importance of Committing for Life.
Specific duties may include:
- Setting up an information booth at a community health fair or other event
- Educating potential donors about the donation process and the need for donations in our community
- Explaining the Commit for Life program
- Handing out brochures and answering questions
- May also include asking potential donors to sign up for an appointment at an upcoming blood drive.
Share your story through public speaking engagements to raise awareness and encourage others to Commit for Life.
Specific duties may include:
- Preparing your story, incorporating blood center talking points and sharing it with a group
- Must be comfortable speaking in front of diverse groups of various sizes.
- Requires public speaking skills and additional training.
- Ideal for those with a close personal connection to blood donations, especially recipients and family of recipients.
Perform office support tasks at our headquarters, Mobile Operations Complex locations near the location near the Texas Medical Center, or any of our Neighborhood Donor Centers.
Specific duties may include:
- Welcome donors and help them sign in
- Answer phone, make and log calls
- Bake and package cookies, make coffee, stock refrigerator, replenish snacks
- Offer snacks to donors when they have completed donating
- Administrative duties such as filing, stuffing envelopes, data entry
- Other duties as assigned.
Additional training for this position will be provided.
Provide transportation services by delivering blood samples from different facilities to our headquarters.
To ensure the safety of the volunteers as well as the product samples, all volunteer drivers will go through a background check and complete defensive driving training provided by Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center.
Volunteer drivers will receive materials about the program and its policies, essential contact information, a T-shirt and personalized volunteer badge. Their shift will begin upon signing in and receiving their vehicle and route assignments. The shift concludes once a successful delivery has been completed and the vehicle returned to Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center.
